NZ engineers to rebuild Nepal

A team of Kiwi earthquake engineers have travelled to Nepal to help the disaster-ravaged country rebuild.

The country was struck by massive 7.8 and 7.3 earthquakes earlier this year, killing nearly 9,000 people and causing widespread damage in and around Kathmandu.

The 15 engineers travelled to Nepal this week, and would remain in Nepal until November, Foreign Minister Murray McCully announced on Friday.

They would provide Nepal's government with technical support in seismic assessment, design of repair and retro-fit solutions, barricading, shoring, temporary works, deconstruction and demolition.

McCully said the deployment would cost $1 million, which built on the $2m provided by New Zealand in the immediate aftermath of the earthquakes.

The Government also sent a smaller group of engineers directly after the devastating earthquakes.

"New Zealanders feel a close connection to Nepal and our on-going support for the rebuild reflects this," he added.
