Upper Mustang Trek is a surge to the ancient utopian civilization in the Upper Mustang Region of Nepal. There are all these fascinating packages of places that come along with this trek. The upper mustang itinerary starts from Kathmandu after you arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport. However, the trekking days will only start from Jomsom. With Heaven Himalaya, the maximum elevation you take on the trek is to Nyi La Pass after Ghaymi which is at 4010 m (13,156ft). Although the height you trek to is above 3500 m, it is a moderate level trek and doesn’t incorporate any difficulties. So, it is also a suitable option for beginner trekkers planning to hike in the high Himalayas.
Upper Mustang generally includes the northern half of the Mustang district close to the Tibetan Border. It is a very historically significant place till this date.
Upper Mustank is a big piece of dry land. Nevertheless the beauty it harbours is unmatchable. Since it receives the least rainfall, the region is one of the driest of all in Nepal. Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, you will be warmly greeted by our representative and transferred to your hotel. After check-in, take some time to rest and recover from your journey. In the late afternoon, you might want to explore the bustling streets of Thamel, a popular tourist area known for its vibrant atmosphere, shops, and restaurants. In the evening, join a welcome dinner at a traditional Nepali restaurant, where you can enjoy local cuisine and a cultural performance.

Journey to the City of Lakes.
After an early breakfast, embark on a scenic drive to Pokhara. The journey takes approximately six hours and offers picturesque views of terraced fields, rural villages, and the Trishuli River. As you approach Pokhara, the lush greenery and distant mountain views become more prominent. Upon arrival, check in to your hotel and take some time to relax. In the evening, you can stroll along the shores of Phewa Lake, enjoying the serene environment and the reflection of the Annapurna range on the water.

Gateway to Upper Mustang.
Today, you have the option to either drive or take a short flight to Jomsom. The flight is approximately 20 minutes and provides stunning aerial views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. If you choose to drive, the journey will take around 6-7 hours, passing through scenic landscapes and crossing several rivers. From Jomsom, you will drive to Kagbeni, the gateway to Upper Mustang. Kagbeni is an ancient village with a medieval feel, featuring narrow alleyways, mud-brick houses, and a unique culture. Spend the evening exploring this fascinating village.

Trekking Through Ancient Trails.
Today's trek is both challenging and rewarding as you ascend to higher altitudes. The trail takes you through the Taklam La Pass (3,624 m) and the Dajori La Pass (3,735 m), offering panoramic views of the rugged terrain and distant snow-capped peaks. You will pass through several small settlements and lush valleys, encountering prayer flags and chortens along the way. The landscape is dotted with juniper trees and wildflowers, adding to the beauty of the trek. Arrive in Syanboche, where you will stay overnight in a guesthouse.

Journey Through the Heart of Upper Mustang.
After breakfast, continue your trek towards Ghami, one of the largest and most picturesque villages in Upper Mustang. The trail crosses the Yamda La Pass (3,850 m) and offers breathtaking views of the barren landscape and distant mountains. You will pass through fields of barley and buckwheat, with traditional white-washed houses dotting the hillsides. As you descend into the village of Ghami, you will be greeted by friendly locals and the sight of the ancient Ghami Monastery. Spend the evening exploring the village and its surroundings.

Reaching the Walled City.
Set out for Lo-Manthang, the ancient walled city and the capital of the Mustang Kingdom. The trail offers magnificent views of Nilgiri, Tilicho, and Annapurna I. As you approach Lo-Manthang, the landscape becomes more arid and dramatic, with the walled city emerging in the distance. Upon arrival, enter through one of the four main gates and explore the narrow streets and ancient monasteries of this fascinating city. Lo-Manthang is home to several important gompas (monasteries) and the King’s Palace, providing a glimpse into the rich history and culture of the region.

Discovering the Ancient Kingdom.
Spend the day exploring Lo-Manthang and its surroundings. Visit the King’s Palace, the Jampa Lhakhang (God House), and the Thubchen Gompa, each offering unique insights into the spiritual and cultural heritage of the area. You can also take a day hike to the nearby villages of Chhoser and Tingkhar. In Chhoser, explore the ancient cave dwellings carved into the cliffs, which were once used as residences and meditation retreats. Tingkhar, the last village in Upper Mustang, offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Return to Lo-Manthang for the evening, reflecting on the day’s experiences.

Retracing Ancient Trails.
Begin your return journey by trekking to Drakmar. The trail takes you through high-altitude landscapes, past the Ghar Gompa (an important monastery with Guru Rinpoche’s legend) and across several mountain passes. The vibrant red cliffs of Drakmar, covered in lush vegetation and surrounded by prayer flags, create a striking contrast against the arid landscape. Arrive in Drakmar, where you will spend the night in a local guesthouse.

Continuing Through Scenic Landscapes.
Continue your descent through the scenic landscapes of Upper Mustang. The trail takes you through several small villages and across high-altitude passes. Arrive in Samar, a charming village surrounded by fields and orchards. The village is known for its traditional white-washed houses and ancient chortens. Spend the evening exploring the village and relaxing in your guesthouse.

After breakfast, take a drive or flight back to Pokhara. If you choose to fly, enjoy a short and scenic flight with stunning aerial views of the Himalayas. If you prefer to drive, the journey will take you through picturesque landscapes and rural villages. Upon arrival in Pokhara, check in to your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. You can explore the lakeside area, take a boat ride on Phewa Lake, or simply relax and enjoy the views.
