A blend of myths and realities
Located in the border of Nepal and Sikkim (India), Mount ‘Kanchenjunga’, is the world’s third highest mountain peak (8586 meters). In Tibetan language, ‘Kanchenjunga’ means ‘The Five Treasures of Snow’ that include gold, silver, precious stones, grain and holy scriptures, each of those five referring one of the five peaks in Kanchenjunga range. The treks in this region give you the magnificent view of the panoramic and high mountains Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse and Makalu with many others nearby. Until now, Kanchenjunga is also not a mass tourist destination, and therefore, its nature and culture have not been changed since long. Highland forests including blossoming rhododendron, waterfalls, diverse floras and faunas, yak pasture fields are additional attractions to the thrilling adventure while trekking through the valleys and the trails along the Himalaya.
Usually starting from the midland green hills in eastern Nepal, this trail follows some spectacular scenery on the way to Kanchenjunga Conservation Area. It is a restricted / controlled trekking area requiring at least two persons and special trekking permits. Not only a wilderness trekking in the eastern part of Nepal, this is also an opportunity to see the culture and traditions of the people in this region. You find many people fond of ‘Tongba’, a local drink of fermented millet and, if you want, with necessary precautions, you can befriend them to experience their lifestyles. This region is also a region of influence for Tibetan culture and thus you can see all Tibetan Buddhist culture, traditions and monuments. Not answered scientifically yet whether the snowman Yeti is a reality, it is believed that Snowman (Yeti) lives also in Kanchenjunga.
With challenges of passing some high mountain passes, the pleasure and feeling of accomplishment after the completion of trekking in this region is incomparable. It is optional for trekkers whether they want to trek to only one or both of Kanchenjunga Base camps on the north and south face of the huge mountain. This region also demands some logistic preparation for camping and self sufficiency in foods and other gears during the trekking.
