Overview

Nepal’s Mustang region is one of the best preserved Tibetan Buddhist sites in the world. It was known as a semi-autonous kingdom until 2008.. Flying to Jomsom and then trekking around Lower Mustang—through Kagbeni, Muktinath, Jharkot and Lupra is the best way if you want to visit the beautiful Mustang without needing to pay for the expensive Upper Mustang permit.

The Lower Mustang Trek offers a unique journey through one of Nepal's most culturally rich and geographically diverse regions. This trek is perfect for those who wish to explore the mystical landscapes and ancient traditions of Mustang without venturing into the more remote Upper Mustang. The adventure begins in Kathmandu, where you can soak in the vibrant culture and historical charm of the city. Visits to UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) and Boudhanath Stupa provide a fascinating introduction to Nepal's religious heritage.

The trek officially kicks off with a scenic drive or flight to Pokhara, a serene city nestled beside Phewa Lake and surrounded by the Annapurna mountain range. From Pokhara, a short flight to Jomsom reveals stunning aerial views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri peaks. The actual trekking begins from Jomsom, taking you to Kagbeni, a quaint village that serves as the gateway to Upper Mustang. The trail to Kagbeni follows the Kali Gandaki River, flanked by the world's deepest gorge.

Continuing from Kagbeni, the trek ascends to Muktinath, a sacred site for both Hindus and Buddhists. Muktinath, located at an altitude of 3,817 meters, is known for its eternal flame and 108 water spouts. Pilgrims from all over the world visit this revered site, adding a spiritual dimension to the trek. The route back to Jomsom offers a chance to revisit the breathtaking landscapes and traditional Thakali villages, providing deeper insights into the local culture and lifestyle.

After completing the trek, you return to Pokhara for a relaxing day, where you can enjoy the city's natural beauty and peaceful ambiance. The journey back to Kathmandu by road offers a final opportunity to admire Nepal's diverse landscapes. The Lower Mustang Trek concludes in Kathmandu, where you can reflect on the unforgettable experiences and memories made during this remarkable journey.

This trek is an excellent choice for trekkers of all levels, offering moderate challenges, stunning scenery, and a rich cultural experience. It's a journey that blends adventure with spirituality, set against the backdrop of some of the most beautiful landscapes Nepal has to offer.
